I have what most people would call a 'brown thumb', meaning that my home is where plants come to die. I don't have good south-facing windows in my house, plus I always forget to water them. Not a great combination for house plants.
I do much better with outdoor garden spaces. I have a small perennial bed next to the house, and two large garden boxes in the back yard for veggies. But indoor plants have always been a struggle for me. My solution was to create plants that are literally, impossible for me to kill.
It started with a request from my niece, who I assume is as good at indoor plants as me. She bought some pots, and asked if I could crochet some cacti plants to put in them. Light bulb moment! I made three for her, then rounded up all of my green yarn scraps to make more for myself. I ended up with a few designs that I combined into a pattern, that has sold a fair amount for me. The pattern includes three different styles of cacti, a couple of different flower options, and crochet 'dirt' that you then put into a small terra cotta pot.
I have since branched out into including succulents, and now am working on flowering plants. In particular, I started this pattern for an African Violet (it is a paid pattern, but very reasonable). As with my other plants, I will use a pot that is already made (I either use terra cotta pots, or buy pots/cups/etc. from thrift stores), rather than the crocheted pot from the pattern. So far, I have the leaves made - and will work on the flowers tonight. I'm hoping to have it done and sewn together by the weekend, so unless something major comes up, I can show off the finished product in a few days.
I'm excited to add to my lineup of plants that I can't kill. Any others you'd suggest me adding to my repertoire?
